Updated: Apr 15, 2021

We’re happy to announce the publication of the Special Issue "Religious Transformation in the Middle East - Spirituality, Religious Doubt, and Non Religion"- guest-edited by prof. Karin van Nieuwkerk (senior researcher, MIDA), who has also contributed the article: “‘Uncovering the Self’: Religious Doubts, Spirituality and Unveiling in Egypt”.

As part of the Special Issue, also ESR Lena Richter has published an article, titled: “Laughing about Religious Authority- but not too Loud”. Based on numerous religion-related memes (see examples below), her online ethnography poses the question to what extent humor is being employed as an (online) tool for young Moroccan non-believers to challenge the religious status quo?

Curious to read more? The Special Issue, including both articles, are published in open access and can be found here.
